Birthday Love Ride

In the above picture, Ildiko is holding a cake she made. The cake says '30' on it because I just turned 30. Not only those 30 years, but also the cake is now gone; eaten, devoured. This cake was a lot more palatable than many of those 30 years, though I can't really complain. I really like where I ended up after all this time, and now I have someone for sharing the time remaining. For this reason, the exclamation point after these three decades was celebrated not with sharing drunkenness with many, as in the years before, but by sharing sobriety with a few.

Pah, this sounds so melancholic! Let me start again: Over the weekend my little schnugglebunny made me a super yummy cheesecake!! She got me other goodies too, but really she herself is still the best present I could ever have gotten! So this year I celebrated with her, plus my amazing parents and brother! Still, it was a birthday, so I was lookin' for adventure!

I had the idea to rent a Harley and then go take part in the annual swiss 'Love Ride', a huge biker event and fund-raiser to benefit disabled children. Hence excessive drinking (for me this does not amount to an actually large quantity) was out of the question over the weekend! Instead, Philipp, who I was able to cajole into joining me, and I rented a 1200 Sportster and a 1570 cc Fat Boy respectively. Here we are with our hog for the weekend:

The three of us started early Sunday morning for the ride, to make sure we were among the 5000 bikes arriving first, and thus permitted to join the ride. Arriving less than an hour after the gates to the airfield, which served as the staging area, opened, we ended up in the fifth 500 bike group. During the few hour wait until the ride commenced, the three of us watched a generic rock band perform, and philosophized about religion. It was nice to see how one could have thousands of swiss bikers meet in a crowded place and not hear a single word said in anger:

Here is more mandatory posing:

Finally at around noon, the ride started in wonderful weather, which remained wonderful for the entire day. We were maybe the 30-th bike in our pack, with an endless flood of bikes following behind. Here is a photo of Ildiko next to our Fat Boy, followed by some pictures of the previous pack moving out:

The ride went on for over two hours in the scenic hills north of Zurich -- it was a beautiful springtime stroll, sometimes moving at a walking pace (no problem for the Fat Boy), and occasionally sprinting down a straight country road. When we got back my back was complaining -- I was unable to befriend the straight manner of sitting in the Harley's wide saddle -- and Ildiko also complained about the tiny slippery back seat -- but she managed to hang on for the whole trip! We had lunch back at the fairground, together with Jan, a good friend of mine who is just recovering from a bout of schizophrenia, and was unable to ride himself. Overall it was an amazing day, and a birthday to always remember.
