Hungary Trip

This year I completed my mandatory annual Hungary trip to visit my friends and family as part of a business trip. I had to go to Budapest and work with the good people at Most Wanted Entertainment for two weeks. I asked for some vacation days while I was there, but the in the end the deadline pressure was too great to permit taking days off. This was a shame, but I could meet up with my mates over the evenings and weekends nonetheless. In the end this was not a bad arrangement, as they mostly work themselves during the week, and this way I had something to do in that time. ;-)
Given that I was at 'home', with people I have known for a long time, I took very few pictures. Here are a few different ones:
I spent a lot of time with Agi (pronounced 'aghee', the Hungarian 'cute' form of 'Agnes'), a friend who just about as long now as I know my brother -- seated on the picture between us -- we grew up together in Hungary before my parents emigrated when I was 12. I lost touch with her at that point, only to find her again thanks to the power of Google early last year.
Almost daily we went to evening concerts of the Budapest open air festival 'Zold Pardon' ('green reprieve'), together with my swedish colleague Jonas, pictured here with a 'Turo Rudi' vending machine. To understand why this automaton made me crack up, you have to realize that in socialist hungary, 'Turo Rudi's, a refrigerated chocolate bar filled with sweet cream cheese were one of the few popular children's snacks. You could get them in the dairy section of every grocery store. Capitalism has not only brought a diverse set of new brands and flavors (dairy multi Danone being one of the producers), but apparently also such streetside automatons. Despite the apparently thriving 'Turo Rudi' market in Hungary with international players, the candy bar is not known anywhere outside the country as far as I know.
At one of the 'Zold Pardon' concerts, the front man called for the audience to swing their illuminated mobile phone displays rather than the more conventional thing with lighters. I was cool to watch these little gadgets take less then ten years to go from being a geek status symbol to mass market phenomenon.
Every time I visit Hungary I try to see what has changed, but I must say the country still hasn't lost its gritty socialist feel, ranging from this 'pimped' Trabant....
....to the abysmal state of this Budapest railway station:
Having grown up with such surroundings one learns to find beauty in the details; I found the texture of this one enchromed plastic sink piping fascinating:
While much of the public grounds are as neglected as ever, fortunately there are creatures that try to help by keeping themselves clean, like Agi's cat for instance. She is shown here as I annoy her. Perhaps Budapest would be well advised to tear down all the deteriorating buildings and replace them with stacks of felines.
I can't help but to close with this shot, idea is from my brother. The profound grafitti reads "everything ends, even the end".
So...that's all for now. I have more pictures, maybe I will post them later.
